Winter rugbys snow joke

Winter rugbys snow joke, sportNot much chance of any action on the field over Christmas, Im afraid. Mind you, I suppose it might come as a surprise to you that there was due to be any. After all, professional rugby league is now a summer sport, which does not start until balmy mid-February. It cant quite break the habit of games on Boxing Day, however, especially in Yorkshire.

There are games scheduled on Sunday at Batley, Castleford, Featherstone and Leeds. Of those four, Leeds versus Wakefield is the most likely to go ahead, thanks to Headingleys heated pitch. Whether the surrounds will be passable is another matter, especially if we have more snow between now and then.

Warrington are hoping if that is the right word to be at Widnes and there are games planned for Barrow and Whitehaven. How much actual rugby takes place, though, is in the lap of the gods.

This is what people forget now when they get all misty-eyed about winter rugby the sheer uncertainty over whether games would happen or not. Now that the climate has gone completely barmy, playing competitive games over Christmas and New Year would be chaos.

The amateur game is another matter. It is still debating whether to follow the lead of the pros and play in summer. In fact, they were due to meet and discuss it the other week. Guess what, the meeting was postponed because of snow.

Happy Christmas everyone. See you when it warms up.
