England want Jamie Carragher to coach

JAMIE CARRAGHER is set to join Englands coaching set-up after being earmarked as a potential national manager.

The FA have invited Liverpool defender Carragher to work with England youngsters aged 16 and upwards.

They are convinced the defender has the footballing knowledge and beliefs to emerge as a successful manager in the future. Top offi cials acted to get the 32-year-old on board early for fear of losing him to TV once his playing career ends, with the Anfi eld legend having a contract that ties him to the club until June 2013.

The FA are well aware punditry offers a tempting career alternative after retirement, with the likes of Alan Shearer, Gareth Southgate and Jamie Redknapp going down that path.

Carragher has already been used by Sky for expert analysis on games, but he has passed his UEFA B coaching badge and is working on his A badge.

The 38-cap star has impressed many with his intelligent outlook about the game and charismatic presence, and FA officials feel he is a natural to work with youngsters.

There are no plans yet to have Carragher sit with national boss Fabio Capello as the injured David Beckham did during the World Cup.

Carragher is currently out of action due to a dislocated shoulder and is not expected to return until mid-February.

The FAs director of football development, Sir Trevor Brooking, revealed yesterday there were plans to go back to the sort of back-room team br! ought in by Ron Greenwood, who was boss from 1977-82.

Brooking said: Ron set up the structure where Bobby Robson was running the B-team with Don Howe and he had Terry Venables involved.

He was trying to get the ongoing forward-thinking structure and that is something we have spoken about in the summer.

Carragher had made no secret of his desire to move into management after he retires.
