Brazil and the Netherlands are through to the quarterfinals of World Cup 2010 after Monday wins, sending Chile and Slovakia home while setting-up a match we’ve looked forward to since the tournament’s onset. To talk about that as well as the last two Round of 16 matches (taking place Tuesday) I’m joined by Laurence McKenna and Kartik Krishnaiyer for this version of the World Cup Buzz Podcast.

Fan Diary 30 August 2010: The Return Of Fernando Torres

The kid is back. Throughout last season, Liverpool supporters groaned asFernando Torresfell again and again into the arms of Ol Mistress Injury. We groaned throughout the summers World Cup as he looked far from his best and couldnt find a single goal (although we also groaned when Pedro ignored a wide open Torres to take a fruitless chance of his own against Germany). And we nearly had a heart attack when Torres collapsed in the closing seconds of the final against the Netherlands. The kid made us feel a little better when he threw the Liverpool scarf around his neck before hoisting the World Cup trophy. But mostly we groaned. This season started slow for both Liverpool and Fernando Torres. (Maybe hes literally a different player: now that his hair is short and dark I cant always pick him out on the pitch when the cameras pulled back. Maybe its not Torres at all) Anyway: more groaning. Felix Magath Is The Man To Lead Schalke To Success This Season Despite An Awful Start. Schalke ended a five-match losing streak on Wednesday evening after they pulled off a last-minute win away to Freiburg. Few could see, after so many disappointing defeats, how Magaths side would be able to pick themselves up with morale seemingly in the dumps throughout the squad. Despite that, Felix Magaths side grabbed their first win of the season and will now have their eyes on a push towards the Bundesliga summit. While its unlikely, Schalke have an x-factor that makes them a real dark-horse for the Bundesliga title this season. That x-factor is Felix Magath.
