World Cup 1990: England 1-1 Germany (Germany win 4-3 on penalties)
This World Cup semi-final encounter took place in Turin and England were eager for the victory, having been bested by their rivals on the previous two occasions. But penalties awaited them and yet again lady luck was not smiling on Bobby Robson and his men.The game that changed the image of football in England forever.
The first half produced no clearcut chances, and it wasn't until the hour mark that the deadlock was broken. Andreas Brehme's free-kick took a wicked deflection off Paul Parker to bamboozle a helpless Peter Shilton. Looking sunk, England were rescued by a Gary Lineker equaliser.
Then Paul Gascoigne got booked and his tears provided England fans with the most iconic image of the tournament as he realised he would miss the final, should England win.
