Four years after England's World Cup glory, and they faced the old enemy again, this time in Mexico and at the quarter-final stage.

England looked to be comfortable when a first half goal from Alan Mullery was added to by Martin Peters early in the second half.

Then, confident of victory, England boss Alf Ramsey removed Bobby Charlton to rest him for the semi-final. It proved to be a catastrophic mistake.

German legend Franz Beckenbauer soon pulled one back when he beat Peter Bonetti - in goal for the ill Gordon Banks - from long range in the 68th minute. This galvanised Germany, and they drew level through Gerd Muller, forcing the game into extra-time.
