Villa go for West Ham star and Swiss World Cup ace

Martin O'Neill is lining up a £14million double swoop to bring Scott Parker and ­Tranquillo Barnetta to Aston Villa.

Midfielder Parker was the only player not put up for sale by West Ham – but O’Neill will offer around £10m. Bayer Leverkusen playmaker Barnetta appeared in ­Switzerland’s three World Cup group games and would cost £4m.

O’Neill is also plotting a move for Cardiff starlet Adam Matthews, 18, as soon as Villa ship out wantaway Luke Young.

Right-back Young wants to return to London and is a target for Fulham and West Ham.

One day last week, near the junction of Maude Street and Rivonia Road, in the Johannesburg suburb of Sandton, a line of smiling young men in shirts and shorts strolled along the pavement towards their hotel.
