England and Germany contested the 1966 World Cup final, in a game devoid of flair, but full of action.

Following a cagey opening few minutes, Germany opened the scoring through Helmut Haller, but were almost immediately pegged back by Geoff Hurst a mere six minutes later, and so it remained when the two teams headed for the dressing rooms at half time.

It wasn't until deep in the second half that England nosed in front with a Martin Peters effort from the edge of the area. But with England looking destined for glory, Germany snatched a goal with almost the last kick of the game.

Extra time commenced, and soon the referee was centre stage. He awarded England their third goal, having consulted his linesman, after a Hurst effort had crashed off the crossbar and down towards the goal line. Hurst went on to complete his hat-trick with only seconds remaining, but the German spirit had been crushed by the official's decision.
