Wolves 2nd best in derby test

Villa gained a deserved victory in Gerard Houliers first game in charge to leave Wolves without a league win since the opening day of the season. Whatbegan promisingly with 5 points from 3 games is turning into a disappointing start for Wolves as they remain on 5 points having lost three on the trot.Wolves were relieved that Jarvis was fit enough to play and gave Dave Edwards his first start of the season;HahnemannFoley, Craddock, Berra, WardEdwards, Henry, Jones, JarvisFletcher, DoyleWolves had the first opportunity when good work from Doyle picked out a good run from Edwards who couldnt find the finish. Villa first went close when Collins got in a header from a corner that Hahnemann blocked with his feet on the line. The opening period belonged to Villa with Marc Albrighton beating Stephen Ward regularly and supplying plenty of dangerous balls into the box. And it was no surprise when that proved to be the supply line for the opening goal when after Jones lost possession in midfield, Heskey played in Albrighton on the right and hishard driven cross was turned in by Downing at the far post.Wolves produced some good moments at the end of the half with a Fletcher volley saved by Friedel who also blocked an effort from Doyle. Wolves are forced into a substitution 5 minutes before the break as a limping Ward is replaced by Elokobi. Thats a change that may have happened at half time anyway as Ward was getting a roasting.Villa were lucky to still have ten men on the field early in the 2nd half as Warnock, already booked, hacks down Doyle. Just a warning from ref Halsey though who then doesnt endear himself to the home fans by booking Craddock for a similar foul. But Wolves were posing more problems for the Villa defence in the 2nd half but theVilla defence appeared to be holding firm until an equaliser came out of the blue. Wolves had been struggling to get Jarvis in the game but just after the hour ! the wing er sent in an inswinger from the left and Friedel appeared to be distracted by Edwards attacking the near post as the cross went in to the far corner of the net.Wolves applied some pressure after the goal but Villa were defending well and as we moved towards the final 20 minutes they were looking the more likely to score again. Hahnemann made a good save to tip over an Ashley Young shot then surprisingly Foley was replaced by Stearman. Jarvis was a threat for Wolves whenever they could get him in the game and the winger must have further impressed the watching Capello. Guedioura came on for Edwards and got in a shot that Friedel saved at the secong attempt, then the Algerian knocks a great crossfield pass to pick out Doyle who cut infield and brought a save from Friedel. But with two minutes of the 90 to play Villa get the breakthrough when a Warnock cross was met with a powerful downward header by Heskey.Hahnemann made a couple of good saves and couldnt be faulted for the goalsFoley looked comfortable and surprise when he was substitutedWard never got tot grips with Albrighton and left the field with injury before he would surely have been taken off anywayCraddock held his own against the Villa frontlineBerra gave away a couple of needless free kicks in dangerous positions but was generally soundEdwards great energy and off the ball running but his touch and passing were poorHenry played as well as anyone on the Wolves teamJones had some good moments but Wolves were 2nd best in midfieldJarvis impressed when in the game but that was nowhere near often enough and Wolves are lacking the creativity to get the ball to him before he is closely markedDoyle worked hard and created some openings but generally well policed by the Villa defenceFletcher had a couple of shots blocked but his touch let him down a few times and looked ineffective when moved to a wide right position in the 2nd halfElokobi did well when he came on to reduce the impact of AlbrightonGuedioura a bright cameo performance before ! leaving the field on a stretcher in the last minute after a poor challenge by SidwellStearman Villa got more joy on the left after he replaced Foley.A largely disappointing day for Wolves who now have what has become two very important games away at Wigan and at home to West Ham.
