Jack Wilshere could shine for Arsenal and England
Under the bright lights at White Hart Lane on Tuesday evening, one of the shining gems on display was Jack Wilshere. The Arsenal midfielder who plays with chutzpah, the hard-working youngster who likes to pass and move and make his team groove, the roaring talent that helped tear Tottenham apart.
It is too early to tell if the 18-year-old will become a Gunner great, if he will soon bestride Wembley in Three Lion attire and be calm, collected and effective in a side in need of new blood. Yet while watching him tame Spurs in Arsenal colours in the Carling Cap, it was impossible not to wash away thoughts of Wilshere one day becoming a fixture for club and country.
Exuding confidence in midfield, Wilshere played calculated passes to his scarlet-clad team-mates, always looking for options, always aware of space and not afraid to embrace adventure. Rushing down the left during a decisive breakaway, Wilshere crossed the ball for Henri Lansbury to turn in. Lansbury deserved reverence, it was his first Gunner goal, but the source of the move was stirred by Wilsheres burst of energy and initiative.
Another fine flash of class then emanated from the Stevenage-born midfielder. With the ball at his feet and with players to beat, Wilshere threaded a perfect pass through four Spurs defenders to Kieran Gibbs running on. Gibbs was adjudged off-side but the through-ball was breathtaking.
Many will hope Wilshere can push on and paint himself on the tapestry of English football for the next 15 years. To help, he has one of the godfathers of man-management by his side and Arsene Wenger held high praise for his midfielder after the match. We know that hes an outstanding football player, said Wenger. He is fearless.
Still so young but so full of promise, ! Wilshere is one to watch this season.
