Bolton thoughts + Highlights

I have an admission to make. Due to unforeseen circumstances, I missed todays match. (Has anyone forgotten what a 3:00 Saturday kick-off feels like by the way?) I rushed back to my computer for news on the Bolton game, knowing full well a win would enable United to catch up by 3 points, giving Chelseas loss yesterday. A few seconds later, I was filled with disappointment. We had indeed clawed back to second place, but by one point, not three. Although Im not in the best position to comment, heres a few thoughts.

The defence yet again is doing its best impression of Swiss cheese. I know we were playing away, and Bolton are decent, but we are leaking goals right now. One or two is acceptable, but not to the degree it has been of late. Ferdinand sat out again, he is clearly not match-fit or he would be playing. Defence needs to be worked on, and fast.

Rooney is not having much fun at the moment. Good reason for his mind to be elsewhere, but we need his goals and performances. And they are below average right now. What is more, he now has an ankle injury to deal with. Reports say it should be fine for Valencia on Wednesday but its just another worry. Speaking of injuries, Giggs is out for a few weeks with a strained hamstring. Disappointing.

So if we look at the positives, United gained a point on the leaders and showed a fighting spirit when behind. Negatives, the defence looks about as solid as jelly and if that is the way against Valencia, the Champions League form will be a concern given the poor start against Rangers. And the only away win achieved this season has been against Scunthorpe. The form of Champions? Not really.
