USA coach Bob Bradley has named a 20-man squad for upcoming friendlies with Poland and Colombia.Team USA meet Poland at Chicagos Soldier Field on Saturday, October 9 before taking on Colombia at PPL Park in Chester three days later.Bradley has included mainly European-based players as the ties fall in place with the start of MLS play-offs.This is a fantastic opportunity to gather many of our players based in Europe and continue to build on the foundation we established during the last four years, said Bradley. We believe we have a strong nucleus of talented players, many of whom we are going to challenge to assume greater leadership roles during the next four-year cycle. We certainly have ideas on how we want to move forward, and these games will be the start of that process.USA squad for Poland and Colombia matches October 9 & 12GoalkeepersBrad Guzan ( Aston Villa , England) Tim Howard ( Everton , England)DefendersCarlos Bocanegra ...

Zabaleta out of Newcastle game

Roberto Mancini has confirmed Pablo Zabaleta will miss Manchester City's Premier League clash at home to Newcastle on Sunday. The Argentina defender suffered a hamstring strain during Thursday night's Europa League clash with Juventus and was taken off at half-time in the 1-1 draw at Eastlands. And although Mancini doubts Zabaleta will be facing a lengthy lay-off, the City boss has already ruled him out for the visit of Newcastle."It is a hamstring," he said. "I do not believe it is serious but he won't play on Sunday."That will force Mancini into another change at left-back having already seen Wayne Bridge, Aleksandar Kolarov and Joleon Lescott play there and be ruled out through injury this season. End Of September QuizThe Answers

Image
So, the month is over and the guess are in, lets see how you did in the End of September Quiz. 1. Who is the tallest player to have appeared in the EPL this season? While Peter Crouch stands at a massive 6ft 7, Birmingham Citys towering new signing Nikola Zigic rises high above him at a mammoth 6ft 7 and a half. Not much in it I know, but always nice to start with a question that ignores the obvious. 2. Who is the shortest player to have appeared in the EPL this season? Must admit this one confused me. I always had it in my mind that Shaun Wright Phillips was the smallest, but no fellow England winger Aaron Lennon is just half an inch shorter at 5 ft 5 inches. 3. Name the two players to have scored against Chelsea this season? Bit of an easier one this, obviously Carlos Tevez scored the winner for Manchester City against the Blues at the weekend, and earlier on in September, Scott Parkers delightful chip broke Chelseas unblemished defensive record. 4.Who is currently the EPLs leading a...

EPL Weekend Viewing Guide: Gameweek 7

Image
Wow, what a weekend Gameweek 6 was. The four Champions League sides really struggled, producing a single point amongst them, and Liverpool, even benefiting from a gift goal, could not win at Anfield. (Five demerits to me for not mentioning the exploding balloon match). I doubt any 27-year olds will be assigned for the reverse fixture on March 19. In fact, you can circle that date as all of the matches we saw this past weekend will be reversed for the 19th/20th of March. I imagine well get Chelsea v Man City in the Sunday 11 am match this time (west coast viewers will be happier!) while Ill bet they give more prominence to Sunderland v Liverpool given the last two meetings. But Im thinking too far ahead. Lets move back to the first matches of October! Chelsea v Arsenal at the Bridge is clearly our 4-star match of this weekend. Spurs v Villa should be very entertaining (3 stars) and the second London derby may provide some end-to-end action too. We have another early season 6-poi...

English Premier League Super Sunday Preview: Chelsea v Arsenal

Image
Another weekend in the Premier League brings another mouth watering clash as London big boys Arsenal and Chelsea meet at Stamford Bridge on Sunday. A Chelsea win would see theChampionsgo seven points clear of Arsenal in the first week of October, a comfortable distance early on.While the two teams stand in third and first respectively, the tantalizing early season test for Arsenal away from homecould prove daunting. While Arsenal have played some fine football through the first few weeks of the season, theyll hope last weekends shock home loss to West Brom wont set the tone forthe encounter, a much tougher test. Arsenal rebounded midweek with a 3-1 win away to Partizan Belgrade in the Champions League, hoping momentum from the match will carry over to the league. Chelsea too are coming off of a loss in the league, like Arsenal, their first of the season. As Chelsea rebounded also in the Champions League v Marseille, theyll want nothing but three points to prove their strength, having l...

Hollywood Film Producer Mike Jefferies Creating Anti-Tom Hicks Video

Image
Filmmaker Mike Jefferies, who is best known as the writer and producer of the movie trilogy, Goal, is on the warpath against Tom Hicks and George Gillett and want them to cease trying to get new funding to run and club, and to leave Liverpool FC. And now Jefferies is working on a short movie to demonstrate his (and fellow Liverpool supporters) frustration about Hicks. The filmmaker flew from his home in South Africa to Liverpool and will be shooting an anti-Hicks film this weekend. Jefferies has been able to get a production company to donate cameras, sound and editing services. Plus Jefferies expects many A-List celebrities, who are Liverpool supporters, to help the cause by appearing in the viral video. Those people may include Samuel L. Jackson, Ian McCulloch (from Echo and The Bunnymen), Ian Broudie (from The Lightning Seeds), among others. The video will be released on YouTube in the near future and the intentions are to hit one million views. In the meantime, Jefferies has publis...

Champions League Review: Schalke Snatch Win, Bremen Battered By Inter

Image
Etoo Bags A Hat-Trick As Inter Thump Werder Bremen. Schalke were under pressure to find three points at home against Benfica, after losing their opening Champions League match by a score of one goal to nil away to Lyon. Werder Bremen, on the other hand, came back in their opening match after being two-nil down to grab a deserved point. Travelling to Inter, though, pulling off a result like that would be near impossible. Schalke 04 2 0 SL Benfica I have to say, I didnt see this one coming at all. I thought Benfica would control the match and the physicality of Oscar Cardozo would provide a massive test for Schalkes back-line, but at the end of the day it was Schalke who came out victorious. Schalke are now unbeaten in three matches in all competitions, which is a huge step up from where they were just a fortnight ago. A late flurry of action provided the win for Schalke, with goals from Jefferson Farfan and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, who has been on flying form for the Konigsblauen since sig...

Is Javier Hernandez Ready For His Chance?

Image
When Manchester United travelled to Valencia without Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs and Wayne Rooney, there was always going to the opportunity for somebody to step up into their shoes. Well five minutes from time young Javier Hernandez took his chance with a well taken goal that will have done his hopes of breaking in to the United first team no harm. Big things were expected from the 22-year-old Mexican forward after his arrival in England earlier this year and after a goal, all be it a fortuitous one, in the Community Shield victory over Chelsea, expectations only grew further. While he hasnt been able to make an impact in Uniteds EPL squad, Hernandezs manager Sir Alex Ferguson claims the Mexican is well aware that he must be patient for his chance: Hes young he knows that. Hes developing a lot in his game and getting some good strength work in the gymnasium. He still has some work to do on that aspect. You cant get away from the fact that hes a fantastic finisher and he showed that, when...
