Manchester United fans, get a grip

Manchester United fans, get a grip, editors choiceLast night, around 30 militant Manchester United fans decended on Wayne Rooneys house to express their anger at his proposed move to Manchester City. Carrying a banner that read Join City and you will die, the group demanded Rooney come and talk to them. Understandably he didnt.

During Manchester Uniteds match against Bursaspor on Wednesday night among the home supporters were various banners. Whos the whore now? read one. Coleen forgave you we wont read another. Rooneys now signed a new contract, so whether the message of the latter banner still holds true remains to be seen.

And its not the first time this kind of thing has happened. When Rio Ferdinand delayed signing a new contract in 2005, the defender recalled in his autobiography he was forced to confront more than 20 geezers with baseball caps and hoods on who had climbed onto a wall outside his house.

It appears that in some insane logic, certain United fans think it is completely unacceptable for one of their star players to even consider moving on, whether it be for more money or to a club that can meet their ambitions as Rooney stated earlier this week. They seem to think this so strongly that a course of intimidation and public vilification are justified.

Yet this doesnt happen to star players at other clubs. Fans of supposed lesser teams have been watching their best players leave for the promise of riches and trophies for years and yet they dont head over to the players houses wearing balaclavas and waving placards around.

If theres any dispute about that, here are a few players who were not targeted by thugs when they intimated they wanted to leave.

Antonio Valencia, left Wigan 2009
Louis Saha, left Fulham 2004
Edwin van der Sar, left Fulham 2005
Michael Carrick, left Tottenham 2006
Ruud van Nistelrooy, left PSV Eindhoven 2001
Rio Ferdinand, left Leeds 2002
Dwight Yorke, left Aston Villa 1998
Wayne Rooney, left Everton 2004
Teddy Sheringham, left Tottenham 1997
Dimitar Berbatov, left Tottenham 2008
